NEWSLETTER February 2018

Revd Julia Boothby

The licensing of Revd Julia Boothby as Priest-in-Charge for St James’, Dingwall, St Anne’s, Strathpeffer, and St Ninian’s, Invergordon, will take place in a service led by Bishop Mark at 12 noon on Saturday 5th May at St Anne’s, followed by a buffet lunch in the Strathpeffer Community Centre. All are welcome to what promises to be a very joyful event.
Julia and David are now planning to move to the Dingwall Parsonage in the week beginning 9th April. Fortunately, they say they are very used to living among builders, plumbers and decorators!

Lent 2018

Although it seems no time since Christmas, Lent is almost upon us already. On Ash Wednesday (14th February) there will now be two services of Eucharist at St James’ at which the imposition of ashes will be available – in the morning, as part of the usual Wednesday service from 10.15am, and in the evening, from 7pm.
To help guide us through Lent, we have obtained copies of a very useful booklet called “Live Lent: Let your light shine”, which has been issued by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. This contains readings, prayers and suggested actions for each day of Lent. The booklet costs £2.50 and copies will be available after Sunday services – or by request to Robin Lingard.
In addition, Barbara and Colin Chandler have kindly offered to host an informal group at their house for an hour from 7pm each Friday during Lent, to discuss themes raised in the booklet. These “Live Lent “ evenings are open to all – and cakes and tea/coffee have been promised at the end of each session!
The first “Live Lent” evening will take place on Friday 16th February. Please contact Robin if you would like to participate in any of these sessions, so that car-sharing arrangements can be made.

Holy Week

As in the past two years, a special service of words and music to lead us into Holy Week will be held at St Anne’s from 6pm on Palm Sunday (25th March). This has proved to be a very peaceful but moving introduction to the Holy Week story, so we hope it will again be well attended. We plan to use both biblical and non-biblical readings relating to the Holy Week themes, and if there is a favourite short poem or piece of prose you would like to suggest for inclusion please contact Robin as soon as possible.
During Holy Week itself the following services will take place –
Monday 26th March – 7pm: Compline at St James’
Tuesday 27th March – 7pm: Compline at St James’
Wednesday 28th March – 7pm: Compline at St James’
Thursday 29th March (Maundy Thursday)
7pm: Eucharist at St James’
Friday 30th March (Good Friday)
10.30am: Service for Good Friday at St Anne’s
7pm: Contemplative Good Friday service at St James’

Easter – and Beyond

On Easter Day our Festival Eucharist will take place at St Anne’s from 10.30am. Arrangements for services in the rest of April remain fairly fluid at present but will be confirmed as soon as possible. We will shortly be discussing arrangements for services in May with Julia, but she has already agreed that she will lead the service on Sunday 6th May at St Ninian’s, the day following her licensing at St Anne’s.

Soup Lunches

There was a very encouraging attendance at the January Soup Lunch and the objective now is to improve on it further at the next two lunches – on Saturday 24th February: and Saturday 24th March. All Soup Lunches take place in the Church Hall, from 12 noon.

Events at St James’

Our next concert in St James’ Church will be at 7.30pm on Sunday 18th February, when Michael Ready will give a flute recital, accompanied by Ailsa Aitkenhead. His programme will include works by CPE Bach, Donizetti, Reinecke and Borne. Refreshments will be served after the concert.
The next concert in the series, a recital by the Fyrish String Quartet (led by Emma Donald), has been arranged to take place on Friday 25th May, also at 7.30pm.
We are most fortunate to be able to attract leading young professional musicians to Dingwall in this way and we look to the congregation both to support these events themselves and to publicise them more widely across the community. Entrance is free, but donations to church funds are much appreciated.
The talk by Rev Laurence Gunner which had been planned to take place on Friday 23rd March has now been postponed, to Friday 20th April.
